Ten years ago, I had the privilege of working as a developer for a program that supported families with young children. One of the key features of the program was a drop-in play and learn space—a welcoming environment where families could gather, explore, and connect.
Designing spaces that felt warm and inviting was central to our mission. We believed that the environment played a powerful role in supporting both children and adults.
Remembering a Thoughtfully Designed Space
Recently, I came across a file of photos from those days. As I flipped through the images, I was reminded of how intentionally we approached every part of the space. From the layout of the furniture to the carefully chosen materials, each element was selected with purpose.
Our goal was always to create a beautiful and meaningful environment—one that sparked learning, connection, and joy for everyone who entered.
Designing Spaces That Invite Curiosity, Creativity, and Joy
We believed that the environment should do more than hold materials—it should inspire. A thoughtfully prepared space encourages children to explore, wonder, and create. It invites them to ask questions and look at the world with curious eyes.
Whether it was a cozy reading corner, a basket of natural treasures, or an easel placed beside a sunny window, every detail was selected with intention. These small touches made a big difference in how children and families engaged with the space.
Designing Spaces for a Sense of Wonder
Children feel valued when they are surrounded by beauty and meaningful materials. They begin to see the world as a place full of interesting things to explore.
A sense of wonder is the beginning of deep learning. It encourages creative thinking, problem-solving, and a lifelong love of discovery. That’s why it’s so important to create environments that speak to the heart and spark the imagination.
Spaces for Miracles, Not Minimums
The following quote by Anita Rui Olds (1999) guided much of our thinking:
“Children are miracles. Believing that every child is a miracle can transform the way we design for children’s care. When we invite a miracle into our lives, we prepare ourselves and the environment around us.
We may set out flowers or special offerings. We may cleanse ourselves, the space, or our thoughts of everything but the love inside us. We make it our job to create, with reverence and gratitude, a space that is worthy of a miracle!
Action follows thought. We can choose to change. We can choose to design spaces for miracles, not minimums.”
This quote continues to inspire me today. It reminds me that every child deserves a space where they feel safe, seen, and inspired to explore. As parents and educators, we have the power to shape those spaces—whether it’s a classroom, a corner of a living room, or a patch of garden.
Creating Magical Places to Learn and Grow
When we design with intention and care, we create more than just a play space—we create a place where learning feels magical. A place where children are free to follow their curiosity, express their creativity, and experience the joy of discovery.
Let’s continue to build these kinds of spaces—for our students, our children, and ourselves. Because every child is a miracle—and every miracle deserves a beautiful place to grow.

Currently, I’m teaching in a Grade 1 classroom – these photos are a great reminder for myself to create spaces, experiences and invitations that are worthy of the young miracles I serve every day.
Happy Teaching and Learning,
