After nearly three decades of teaching children to read, I’ve learned something that most people miss: struggling readers are almost never struggling because they aren’t trying hard enough. They’re struggling because a specific foundational skill, like phonemic awareness, decoding and fluency, was never explicitly addressed. I know how to find it. I know how to teach it. And I know how to help a child go from dreading reading to believing that they can. That’s what 30 years in the classroom gave me and it’ s exactly what I bring to every child I work with.
