Seasonal Change Lesson Activities and Resources

The Grade 1 Saskatchewan Curriculum has an outcome that focuses on Daily and Seasonal Changes. Some of the indicators ask the students to compare seasons, observe changes, group objects according to the season, and to examine how animals, humans and plants adapt to the seasonal changes.

Here are some of the resources and learning activities I use with my students. Perhaps, they will be useful for your child or students.

How People Adapt

My students have a great context for this topic about seasonal change. We have a very distinct change in weather during our winter season and the children know the clothing changes that take place. They can also identify the types of outdoor activities that are common during the winter months. I use my discussion slides to start the conversation.

How Animals Adapt

We discuss the various ways animals in our community adapt to the seasonal change.

We explore hibernation, migration and adaptations.

How Plants Adapt

We discuss the changes we see in the trees in our community. I also use my discussion slides to support the conversations.

The Arctic

I do a deep dive into the Arctic as children typically relate cold weather to the North Pole. We discuss animals in the Arctic and how they adapt to the cold. We also read about the Northern Lights.

Following our Arctic Inquiry, I invite the students to try a couple of art experiences.

Here are some pictures of their work. We use a wet on wet watercolor technique using liquid watercolors and salt. I love the uniqueness of each piece.

Here are a few other photos of the invitations I have available for the children to explore seasonal change.
