Why I Stopped Using Worksheets to Teach Science, Social, and Health—and What I Do Instead

For a long time, I struggled to find the right way to teach Science, Social Studies, and Health in my busy Grade 1 classroom. The solution for me were Discussion Slides!

Like many primary teachers, my focus was often pulled toward literacy and numeracy. These subject areas felt harder to plan, and most of the resources I came across didn’t meet the needs of my students—or match our Saskatchewan curriculum.

I spent countless hours scrolling through websites and Teachers Pay Teachers, only to:

  • Piece together lessons from multiple sources
  • Purchase resources that didn’t align with my outcomes
  • Spend valuable planning time modifying content
  • Rely on worksheets that weren’t at my students’ reading or writing level

It felt like I was giving my students busywork—when I knew they were capable of more.

Does this sound familiar?

You’re not alone. And it doesn’t have to be this hard.

How Discussion Slides Changed Everything

After years of trial and error, I decided to stop building my lessons around worksheets and start building them around discussions. I created Discussion Slides—a flexible, engaging, and outcome-aligned way to teach Science, Social Studies, and Health.

Discussion slides are designed with real classrooms and real students in mind:

  • They’re built to match the Saskatchewan Grade 1 and Grade 2 curriculum.
  • They do not assume that students can read or write independently.
  • Discussion slides are designed for teacher-facilitated conversations, not silent seatwork.

Why Discussion-Based Teaching Works

  •  They develop deeper understanding by talking about what they know and listening to others.
  • They use oral language to process new ideas, make connections, and ask questions.
  • They build confidence as they learn to share their thinking in a safe, supportive space.
  • They collaborate and learn from each other, fostering a stronger classroom community.

These are rich, meaningful learning experiences—not just tasks to check off.

Discussion Slides are Designed for Real Teachers Like You

Discussion Slides are built from the ground up to save you time and reduce planning stress. You can:

  • Use them in whole-group discussions, small groups, or even with partners.
  • Extend the learning by adding hands-on materials or books
  • Be confident knowing you are meeting outcomes without hours of prep.

They’re high-impact, low-prep, and teacher-friendly.

A Better Way to Teach

If you’ve ever felt like you were short-changing your students in Science, Social Studies, or Health, I want you to know: you’re not failing them. You just need the right tools.

With discussion-based teaching, you can move away from worksheets and towards learning that feels purposeful, engaging, and developmentally appropriate.

My Discussion Slides have transformed how I teach—and I know they can do the same for you.
